10 Reasons Dentists Are Getting Spectrophotometer Accuracy For $399 Instead Of $3,000

Your operatory light changes all day. Your eyes get tired by five. The E220 reads the shade under its own controlled light source — VITA Classical and 3D-Master, both on one screen, in about a second.

Summary:

The E220 doesn't replace your eyes — it removes the two things your eyes can't control: the light in the room and the hour of the day. $399 instead of $3,000.

01 / objective and fast

Objective shade matching that takes less time than opening a shade guide

Most dentists assume the objective route means a three-thousand-dollar device, a laptop and a new workflow. It doesn't. Place the tip flat against the middle third of the facial surface, press once, read the screen. About a second — fast enough to confirm the shade on every indirect case, not only the difficult ones.

The same tooth photographed under six different light sources

02 / controlled light

Your operatory light changes all day. The device brings its own.

Morning window light, afternoon lamp, a long day behind your eyes — the same tooth reads differently in each. The E220 measures under its own light source and compensates for the ambient light in the room. Room lighting doesn't matter. Eye fatigue doesn't matter.

VITA 3D-Master shade guide next to the Dentiphoto E220 on its base

03 / both vita systems

Reads both VITA systems — and shows them at the same time

Top line: the closest VITA 3D-Master shade. Bottom line: VITA Classical, A1 to D4. Nothing to switch, nothing to convert, nothing your technician has never heard of. Your VITA guide went digital — it didn't get replaced by a scale nobody in the lab uses.

Shade result in one second with the colour deviation shown

04 / deviation, not just a name

Not just a shade name — how far off it is, and what's second closest

A tab name on its own hides the disagreement. The screen shows the deviation from the closest match and the second-closest shade: green when it matches, amber when it doesn't. Your lab slip says “A2, leaning A3” instead of “A2” and a phone call three days later.

05 / nothing to set up

No app. No Bluetooth. No calibration ritual.

Nothing to pair, nothing to update, no subscription. It charges on its base between patients — pick it up, read, put it back. 112 grams, cordless, wiped down with 75% alcohol between patients, no autoclave and no risk to the optics. Your assistant will use it correctly on day one.

The arithmetic

2 shade remakes a month

× $250 a case

$6,000

gone in a year

$399the device, once

07 / the arithmetic

One prevented remake and it has paid for itself

A shade remake costs the lab fee a second time, the chair time a second time, a second appointment for the patient, and a conversation you'd rather not have. Most dentists put that somewhere between $150 and $400 per case. The device is $399, once.

Three different VITA shade tabs held against the same central incisor by three clinicians

08 / repeatability

Same tooth. Three clinicians. One number.

Ask two colleagues and your assistant to shade the same central incisor and you'll often get three answers, each of them defensible. That isn't a skill problem — it's a light-and-eyes problem. A number ends the discussion at the chair instead of at the try-in.

09 / a second opinion

It's not a replacement for your eyes. It's a second opinion for them.

Twenty years of shade matching isn't something a device replaces. But eyes have bad days, and nobody can see their own fatigue from the inside. Call the shade the way you always have, then confirm it in one second before the case leaves for the lab — not after the crown comes back wrong.

Why dentists are pre-ordering the Dentiphoto Edition

I bought the earlier shade reader from Dentiphoto and, honestly, it paid for itself pretty quickly. I still use my eye, take photos and double-check with a tab, but we've had far less A2/A3 guesswork and noticeably fewer shade-related remakes, especially on single anterior units. I've already pre-ordered the Dentiphoto Edition for our second operatory.

The warranty is handled directly by Dentiphoto, and there is one support team instead of being bounced between a reseller and a factory. The measurement platform was already solid; now the support side finally matches it. Easy pre-order.
Dentiphoto Edition pre-order customer
I've ordered quite a bit from Dentiphoto over the years, and their communication has always been straightforward. As soon as I saw they were putting their own name behind the shade device, I placed my pre-order. I would much rather buy a clinical tool from a dental company I already know than take a chance on another generic listing. Really looking forward to putting it into our daily workflow.

I'll still make the final call with my eye, photos and the shade tab. What I want is a repeatable second opinion for those borderline anterior cases. My lab works in 3D-Master, while most of us in the office still think in Classical, and this gives us both values plus the runner-up shade and ΔE on one screen. No extra work for the assistants. That's exactly why I pre-ordered.

The first branded batch is limited

We ordered a fixed number of units for the first Dentiphoto-branded run. When they're reserved, the next batch ships in November at the $599 list price. Pre-orders are filled in the order they're placed.

Questions dentists ask

How is this different from the shade guide I use now?
Your guide gives you a tab to compare against under whatever light is in the room. The E220 measures the tooth under its own light source and returns the closest shade on both VITA systems, plus the deviation and the second-closest shade.
Which VITA systems does it read?
VITA Classical A1–D4 and VITA 3D-Master. Both appear on the screen at the same time — there's nothing to switch.
Does room lighting affect the reading?
No. The device measures under its own light source and compensates for ambient light. Window, operatory lamp or overhead, the reading stays the same.
How long does one reading take?
About a second. Place the tip flat against the middle third of the facial surface, perpendicular to it, slightly away from the gingival margin.
Do I need an app, Bluetooth or calibration?
No. No pairing, no updates, no subscription. The result appears on the device screen.
How do I disinfect it between patients?
Wipe the tip and housing with 75% medical alcohol before and after each patient, and put the protective cap on after the session. No autoclave — heat would damage the optics.
When does it ship, and what if I need one now?
Pre-orders from the first branded batch ship on September 15 with tracking. If you need a unit immediately, the current unbranded stock is available on the product page and ships within 24 hours.
What's the difference between the US and EU version?
Only the plug on the power adapter. The device is identical; the adapter runs on 100–240 V.
Can I order several for the practice?
Yes. 2 units at $379 each, 3 at $359, 5 or more at $319. Write to support@dentiphoto.com and we'll prepare one invoice for the practice.
What if it doesn't work for me?
Use it for 30 days on real cases. If it doesn't earn its place at the chair, send it back for a full refund — support@dentiphoto.com, answered within 24 hours.
