The Occlusal Contrastor is designed for occlusal mirror views. The curved end lifts the lip or other parts away to keep it away from the teeth and it gives it a better view with the complete black background.

The Buccal / Lingual Contraster has a tapered end that slides down the buccal corridor and the notched end is inserted behind the teeth.  That makes the photo looks more presentable.
