Questions dentists ask before buying
How is this different from a $3,000 chairside spectrophotometer?
The job most practices actually need — an objective, repeatable VITA reading at the chair — works the same way on both: place the tip, press once, read the value. The premium units add software suites, layered shade mapping and practice-management integration. If your workflow depends on those, buy those. If what you need is a number you can defend to your lab before the case leaves the office, this does it for a fraction of the price.
Which shade systems does it read?
Both. VITA Classical A1–D4 and VITA 3D-Master appear together on one screen after a single measurement, so you send your lab whichever notation they work in — no conversion chart on the cabinet door. Dentiphoto is not affiliated with VITA Zahnfabrik; VITA Classical and VITA 3D-Master are trademarks of their respective owner.
How accurate is it, really?
The tip seals against the tooth surface and illuminates it with its own calibrated light source, so the operatory lamp, daylight from the window and end-of-day eye fatigue drop out of the equation. Manufacturer specification: ±0.1 ΔE colour resolution and a 98% shade-match rate. The test that matters chairside is repeatability — take five readings on the same tooth and you should get the same value five times. That is what makes the number defensible when the lab disagrees.
Do I need an app, Bluetooth, calibration or consumables?
None of them. The result appears on the device screen itself — nothing to pair, nothing to install, no account and no subscription. There is no user calibration routine and no disposable tips to reorder. Wipe the tip with your usual surface disinfectant between patients; the handpiece is not autoclavable.
Can my assistant take the reading?
Yes — and for most practices that is where the value sits. One button, no training: whoever holds it records the same value, so shade selection stops depending on who happened to be in the room that day. The handpiece weighs 113 g, is cordless, and holds over 6,000 readings per charge on its base.
What if it does not work out in my practice?
You have 30 days to try it chairside. If it does not earn its place, email support@dentiphoto.com and send it back for a full refund — no restocking fee. Every unit is CE certified and carries a 1-year manufacturer warranty. Ordering for a clinic or need an invoice for bank transfer? Same address — we apply volume pricing from two units.
What dentists say after the first week
★★★★★ Very Good 4.9/5Bought it after a remake on an upper central — lab fee plus an awkward second appointment. Two weeks in it read A3.5 where I had written A3, and the technician agreed once the crown was seated. Only gripe is the screen is small, I hold it up to read it. It still paid for itself in the first month.

My lab works in 3D-Master and I think in Classical. Seeing both on the screen at once is the whole reason I bought it — no more converting off a printed chart. A rep quoted me 2,800 EUR for a comparable unit last year, so I went in sceptical. Readings come out consistent, which is what actually matters.

Three operatories, three different lighting setups, and we never agreed on shade between us. Now everyone records the same value and the chart notes actually mean something. Charged it twice in three weeks. Takes a little practice to keep the tip flat against the tooth — once you do, the readings repeat.

Honestly bought it for the patient conversation as much as the accuracy. Showing someone a number on a screen lands differently than holding tabs up next to their mouth — anterior case acceptance is up since. Small enough to live on the bracket table. Wish it shipped with a spare tip cover.
